The word hypnos meant “sleep,” and like other daimones he had little characterization beyond his function.įittingly, Hynos was the son of Nyx, the primordial goddess of the night. He was a type of minor deity called a daimon that personified his domain. The most famous story of the Greek god of sleep showed that even the king of the gods was subject to the workings of Hypnos. All people, and even the gods, were influenced by him for a large portion of their lives.īecause of this, Hypnos played a role in several well-known stories. These spirits were defined by their role and typically had no true mythology beyond it.Īs the Greek god of sleep, however, Hypnos played a more prominent role in life than many other minor gods and goddesses. He was one of hundreds of minor gods that influenced the world and the people in it. In the ancient world, this role was filled by a god instead of a fairy-tale being. It is unknown who his consort is- as he his a lesser known god- though in some myths his partner is Makaria - daughter of Hades in some myths, representing a blessed death.Children in the modern world hear stories about the Sandman, a magical being that puts the people of the world to sleep each night. Thanatos' lineage includes: Nyx, Erebus (in some myths), Ares, Eris, Charon, Hypnos, Momos, and the like. Thanatos was angered by this, but felt Heracles won fairly and let him live. Somewhat angered by this, he went down to Hades and fought Thanatos. Days later, Heracles attended her funeral, and found himself to be enjoying it. Because nobody else stepped forward, Alcestis, being the loyal and loving wife she was, came forward and sacrificed herself. However, someone now had to take his place. However, Apollo, who had to serve him for one year, got the Fates drunk and saved him. She was angered, and filled his bed with snakes, killing him. On the night of the marriage, Admetus was drunk and forgot to give his sacrifice to Artemis. Ares soon found out the problem, and released Thanatos.Īlcestis and Admetus were getting married. Days passed, and no human or monster would die. Thanatos showed him, and Sisyphus sealed him in Tartarus. Thanatos was tricked by Sisyphus, however, when Sisyphus asked Thanatos to show him how the chains worked. Because of this, Zeus ordered Thanatos to throw him into Tartarus. He also had children with his niece, had stolen his own brothers right to the throne, and betrayed Zeus. Sisyphus often killed guests and travelers, which violated certain laws the gods put into place. He has two sisters, the Keres sisters.ĭuring the Trojan War, Thanatos and his brother, Hypnos, carried the dead body of Sarpedon off the battlefield to his homeland to be given a proper burial. As well as his twin brother is Hypnos, the god of slumber. ψυχή ( psyche), the Greek word for butterfly, can also mean soul, or life. His symbols are a sword, an upside down torch (representing the end of life), and a butterfly. The two are associated with peaceful death as opposed to the Moros, Keres, etc.Īccording to myth if Thanatos cut your hair with his sword, you will die. He is rarely seen without his twin, Hypnos - the God of Sleep. Thanatos is often seen as a bearded, winged, man and sometimes as a winged youth, with flowers.
